Hermit crab toys? painted?

ok well i want to use some fish aquruim supplies as toys for my hermit . I have herd several times not to keep anything painted with hermit . I have also herd several times you can use fish deco. for a hermit crab tank. But almost every fish tank deco. out there is painted. Am i hearing a ton of lies or can i use it?
